RE: J&J COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics Postponed
A joint CDC and FDA statement issued today calls for an immediate pause on the administration of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine following six cases out of 6.8 M administered doses, of a rare but severe type of blood clot in individuals receiving the vaccine. There will be no COVID-19 vaccination clinics today featuring the Janssen vaccine. As a result, we will be canceling clinics utilizing Johnson & Johnson vaccine scheduled for today and tomorrow pending further instructions from CDC and the FDA.
The pause was announced out of an abundance of caution. The CDC intends to convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices tomorrow to review the cases to determine their potential significance. The pause will also allow time for healthcare providers to understand the potential risk of these adverse events and plan for proper recognition and management.
To date, the cases have been reported in women ages 18 to 48. If your staff or residents who received the Janssen vaccine experience severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain or shortness of breath within three weeks of getting vaccinated, they should contact their healthcare provider. You can access the full release statement here: Joint CDC and FDA Statement: Johnson & Johnson COVID19 Vaccine Pause.
Clinics scheduled with Pfizer and Moderna vaccine will go forward as planned. Our current availability of Pfizer and Moderna is limited at this time.
