Individuals with cognitive disabilities are at a 1.5-2x higher risk of depression compared to the general population, often exacerbated by a big event taking place in their life. But depression is often missed due to other challenges and the lack of formal diagnostic tools. Because proper diagnosis and treating depression can make a large difference in quality of life, understanding and recognizing the symptoms can help in recognizing and treating depression in I/DD individuals.
