Partners in Fall Prevention: The Complementary Roles of Nurse & Pharmacist

June 4, 2024

Presented by:

Rebecca Wingate, PharmD, VP of Clinical Operations, PharMerica

Peggy Brekke, RN, Director of Nurse Consulting Services, PharMerica

Date: Tuesday, June 4, 2024

One in four Americans over the age of 65 falls each year, whether due to decreased mobility, cognitive impairment, vision problems, or medications. And the consequences can be severe: fractures, head injuries, joint dislocations, lacerations, and even death. Since falls account for over 80% of injury-related admissions to hospitals among those over 65, prevention is critical, and nurses and pharmacists each play an important role in effectively reducing the risk of injury. In this program, we’ll discuss risk factors, environmental hazards in the care environment, the impact of medications, how to evaluate a resident’s risk, and interventions long-term care organizations can take to protect those in their care.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify common causes and risk factors of falls
2. Understand the impact of medications on fall risk
3. Learn screening techniques to assess risk
4. Review interventions that have shown to be effective deterrents to falls and increase safety
