Each resident’s drug regimen must be free from unnecessary drugs. An unnecessary drug is any drug when used:
- In excessive dose (including duplicate drug therapy);
- For excessive duration;
- Without adequate monitoring;
- Without adequate indications for its use;
- In the presence of adverse consequences which indicate the does should be reduced;
- Any combination of the reasons above.
How To Avoid a Deficiency
- Facility should create resident-specific care plans that include monitoring parameters based on the medication, indication, and goals of therapy.
- Consultant Pharmacist to review all resident medical charts and ensure monitoring compliance.
- Any non-compliance monitoring should be discussed at the quarterly QAPI meetings and plans of action should be put into place to correct this practice
