2026 Diabetes Treatment Updates for Individuals with I/DD

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions among adults with I/DD, often leading to serious complications if not properly managed.
This session will explore the key concerns surrounding diabetes in this population, including strategies for effective disease management to enhance both health outcomes and quality of life. We will examine treatment options while considering unique factors that influence therapy decisions, including common co-morbidities, metabolic concerns, adherence challenges, and medication administration difficulties. The session will conclude with practical tips on collaborating with consultant pharmacists, nurses and prescribers to optimize health, safety, and overall diabetes care for individuals with I/DD.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explore the most commonly used diabetes therapies for individuals with I/DD, including their benefits and potential risks.
2. Understand the unique factors influencing diabetes management in this population, such as co-morbidities, metabolic concerns, and adherence barriers.
3. Identify best practices for safe and effective medication administration.
This program is pending approval for one hour of nursing continuing education, as well as by NAB/NCERS for nursing home administrators and by NABP for pharmacists. Provider (Pedagogy, Inc) approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #: CEP 15467 for 1.00 Contact Hours. Attendees must be in attendance for at least 50 minutes to receive credit.
