This webinar will outline a clinical oversight framework for the safe, ethical, and appropriate use of psychotropic medications among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The content will emphasize person-centered decision-making, clear diagnostic indication, informed consent, human rights protections, and the use of the least restrictive alternatives before initiating or escalating medication. The framework also defines expectations for therapeutic drug monitoring, medication-specific safety review, documentation, interdisciplinary communication, and reassessment of ongoing need. By identifying high-risk prescribing triggers and establishing a practical implementation checklist, this guidance supports consistent clinical practice, improved medication safety, protection of individual rights, and better quality-of-life outcomes for people receiving psychotropic medication support.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Establish a consistent framework for safe, ethical, and clinically appropriate use of psychotropic medications for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
2. Support appropriate treatment of diagnosed psychiatric conditions while preventing unnecessary medication use for convenience, staff control, or unmanaged environmental triggers.
3. Define expectations for documentation, informed consent, human rights review, medication monitoring, and interdisciplinary follow-up.
This program is pending approval for 1 participant hour of nursing continuing education, as well as by NAB/NCERS for nursing home administrators (approval #20270921-1-A123866-DL).
