Terri Cannedy, Director of Nursing I/DD – Pharmacy Consultant, PharMerica

This webinar will provide training and support to nurses and nurse administrators who work in the community I/DD setting by reviewing best practices for the day-to-day operational management of medications, a crucial component of safe and effective care for the people they serve. This training encompasses the cycle fill process, effective EMAR utilization, proper drug disposition, and vigilance in preventing mismanaged medications and medication errors.

The cycle fill process ensures timely and consistent medication availability while EMAR systems provide structured documentation to support accuracy and accountability. Proper drug disposition safeguards against diversion and maintains regulatory standards. Failure to adhere to these practices can lead to medication errors which may result in adverse patient outcomes, compromised safety, and significant legal or financial consequences. A robust medication management system is essential to maintain quality care and minimize risk.

Learning Objectives:
1.    Describe essential components of an effective cycle fill management process.
2.    Identify common breakdowns in medication management that directly impact safety, clinical outcomes, and compliance.
3.    Effectively use EMAR systems such as documentation and reports to maintain accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
4.    Authenticate mismanaged medications and medication errors and recognize the real-world consequences they create.
